One of the most common questions you’ll get asked at a networking event.
But here’s the trap.
Most people answer with a version of:
“Yeah, super busy right now.”
Without knowing it, you’ve unintentionally closed the door on that person being able to help.
Or a quality conversation.
Because here’s what others actually hear:
❌ “I don’t need any help.”
❌ “I’m too busy for new work.”
❌ “There’s no room for opportunity.”
This is the impact of what I've come to call the 'Auto-Pilot Networking Response'.
Instead, offer up a more realistic picture.
Try something:
✅ “Things are actually busy, but looking to grow [X] area of the business.”
✅ “We're busy, but currently have a challenge with [X].”
✅ “Things are quiet in [X] part of the business, so looking for ways around that.”
✅ “It’s quite tough at the moment, so looking to build connections in [industry].”
You might genuinely be busy (gold star for networking when you are - that's the best time).
But find me a business without a challenge.
Or something they're working on that others could help with.
This invites them in to think how they can.
These responses will spark a conversation.
Not stifle it.
So, at your next event, take a moment before to think how you'd respond to that question.
My suggested alternatives invite insight, and give others the chance to actually help you.
Because believe it or not - people want to do so!
You just need to give them something to work with.
This starts by avoiding the ‘Auto-Pilot Networking Response’.
Then see your conversations improve.
Happy networking!
